My heart froze: my five-year-old daughter Lily, and our longtime babysitter Jessica \u2014 someone I had always trusted \u2014 were nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The house held no clues. No note, no hastily scribbled message. Nothing. Just an unsettling emptiness, amplified by the oppressive quiet.

Reality hit me like a freight train: they had planned this trip behind my back, and Jessica had been kept in the dark.
